Hedge-fund titan Bill Ackman made his professional tennis debut this week in Newport, but his run was cut short by a UTR Pro Tennis Tour star.
On Tuesday, Ackman and his partner Jack Sock (UTR Rating 15.16) lost in the first round of the Hall of Fame Open to Australians Bernard Tomic (14.01) and Omar Jasika (13.94), 6-1, 7-5.

Bill Ackman Plays at Hall of Fame Open 2025
The 59-year-old Ackman received a doubles wildcard alongside Sock into the ATP Challenger 125 held at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Rhode Island.
Ackman is widely known for his Wall Street success and for backing American tennis star Frances Tiafoe early in his career. A passionate recreational tennis player, Ackman plays multiple times a week and has participated in exhibition events, but this was his first professional tennis match.
A tennis update. I met @NickKyrgios on @X and he proposed we play an ATP tournament together. Unfortunately, Nick got injured so our doubles hopes have been delayed, but fortunately fate intervened. @JackSock managed to get a wildcard into the @TennisHalloFame Hall of Fame Open… https://t.co/YR0IDQsi17

Match Recap: Tomic/Jasika def. Ackman/Sock
Ackman had the honor of sharing a court with Sock—a former world No. 8 in singles and winner of three Grand Slam doubles titles, as well as the Newport doubles champion in 2021. Sock retired in 2023 and has since pursued professional pickleball. Ackman initially planned to team up with Nick Kyrgios, but the Australian is injured.
Tomic is a former world No. 17 while Jasika boasts a current ATP ranking of No. 202 and is a two-time UTR Pro Tennis Tour champion. He most recently won a UTR PTT title in April in Melbourne, and just competed at Wimbledon alongside 48 other UTR PTT players.
Ackman was looking to become the oldest player since Gardnar Mulloy (age 64 in 1978) to capture an ATP point.
