UTR Sports NIT Championships

Launched in 2023, the NIT Championship was created by UTR Sports to allow men’s and women’s teams to gain valuable postseason experience. The tournament had been discussed for years, and UTR Sports found a way to make it happen, creating the first-ever NIT tournament for college tennis. Every year, participating teams vie for the coveted spots, with the competitive fields being announced in May.

College tennis FAQs

College tennis FAQs

How does college tennis work?

College tennis is structured around team competition, with players representing their school in matches against other colleges. College teams can compete in conferences and at the national level. Depending on the division (Division I, II, or III, NAIA, or NJCAA), rules about scholarships, practice hours, and match formats can vary.

What colleges offer tennis scholarships?

NCAA Division I and Division II schools, NAIA programs, and junior colleges (NJCAA) can offer athletic scholarships and aid for tennis players. Division III schools do not offer athletic scholarships, but they may provide merit- or need-based financial aid for student-athletes.

When is the college tennis season?

The main season for college tennis is in the spring (January–May), when most dual matches and conference/national championships occur. However, the fall season (September–November) includes individual tournaments and regional events.

What UTR do you need to play college tennis?

UTR Rating ranges vary by division, conference, and college program. For example, most Division III men’s players have a UTR Rating between 7.00–10.00, while women’s players typically fall between 4.00–7.00. Coaches value work ethic, academics, and team fit in addition to rating.

How do you get recruited for college tennis?

Playing well, playing often, and being patient are the keys to improving your UTR Rating and being recruited. Compete in sanctioned tournaments like UTR Sports events, keep your UTR Sports profile up to date, and take advantage of our new College Coach Views tool to see who is interested in recruiting you. Attending college showcases and camps, and maintaining good communication also increases visibility.

How does college tennis scoring work?

College tennis uses a team-based dual match format. Matches begin with three doubles sets worth one collective point (best two out of three wins the doubles point). Then, six singles matches are played, each worth one point. The first team to reach four points wins a dual match.

Can anyone join college club tennis?

Yes! Club tennis is open to most students, regardless of UTR Rating or skill level. It’s a great way to stay competitive, meet teammates, and compete against other schools without the commitment required for varsity athletics.
