Jack McCarthy hits a backhand and is a UTR PTT champion

College Tennis Shines, Australia's Parnaby Sees Double on UTR PTT in August

It must have felt like a college practice match back in Ithaca, N.Y., for Jack McCarthy (12.90) and Felipe Pinzon (12.72).

Both players compete for the Big Red of Cornell University during the school year.

But last month, they were competing for themselves and against each other on the UTR Pro Tennis Tour in Boca Raton, Florida.

Much more was on the line than would be during a practice match as well. McCarthy and Pinzon met in the final of the PTT $25K Boca Raton.

The 6-foot-4 McCarthy, who's from Australia, battled past his teammate 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 6-4 to win his first PTT title.

It was an especially busy month on the UTR Pro Tennis Tour and for PTT-connected players, as dozens of players with PTT experience also competed at the 2024 US Open, the season's final major championship.

Li Tu, also from Australia and a former PTT champion, took a set off Carlos Alcaraz in Arthur Ashe Stadium at the US Open.

More of Tu's compatriots, such as McCarthy, enjoyed success on the UTR Pro Tennis Tour.

Alana Parnaby, from Rowville, Australia, experienced déjà vu on the PTT last month. But in a good way.

On August 11, Parnaby (UTR Rating 10.40) looked across the net in her PTT $25K final in Melbourne and saw Belle Thompson& (UTR Rating 9.72). Parnaby rolled 6-3, 6-3 to celebrate her first PTT title.

A week later, on August 18, Parnaby advanced to another PTT final in Melbourne. Who did she see across the net? Yep, Thompson was waiting once more.

And Parnaby again got the better of her, claiming back-to-back titles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Elsewhere on the PTT in August, college tennis players showed yet again that the college tennis to pro tennis pathway is stronger than ever.

Elise Wagle (10.33) of the UCLA women's tennis team won her first PTT title in Boise, Idaho, beating Neena Feldman (9.81) of Northwestern University 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 6-2.

And Stanford's Katherine Hui (10.67), the 2023 US Open girls singles champion, beat Zoe Hammond (10.07) 6-1, 6-0 to claim her first PTT crown.
