5 Takeaways from 2024 US Open as Jannik Sinner wins Second Major

The US Open wrapped up Sunday with Jannik Sinner (UTR Rating 16.36) defeating Taylor Fritz (UTR 16.09) 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 to take the crown.

It was an exciting fortnight of men’s tennis, and while Sinner added to his impressive trophy case, there were many other storylines to follow.

Here are five takeaways from the final Grand Slam of the season:

Jannik Sinner hits a forehand at 2024 US Open

Jannik Sinner is entering exclusive company

We’ll start with the Sinner, now a two-time Slam champion with both the US Open and Australian Open titles this year.

He is definitely taking his place as one of the best players of the new generation, and at the same time is entering very exclusive territory.

At the US Open, he became just the fifth player with more than 22 Grand Slam wins in a single season – after four players known as Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray.

Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz face off in 2024 US Open men's singles semifinal in New York

Spotlight shined on American men’s tennis

Fritz and Frances Tiafoe (UTR 15.84) certainly gave American tennis fans a lot to cheer for as the two stars had career moments at the US Open.

The two clashed in an all-American semifinal, with Fritz securing his first Slam final appearance. En route, Fritz also impressively ousted Alexander Zeverv (UTR 16.25) and Casper Ruud (UTR 16.01).

For Tiafoe, it was his second Slam semifinal (after the 2022 US Open) and marked a return to top form. A Top 10 player last year, he had dropped as low as No. 30 in 2024, but he has now climbed back to No. 16.

Jack Draper a new British star

Jack Draper (UTR 15.97) is the newest member of the ATP Top 20 after a sterling breakout two weeks at the US Open.

Beginning the year just outside the Top 60, he’s had several highlights in 2024 – including winning his first title at Stuttgart, finishing runner-up at Adelaide, defeating Carlos Alcaraz (UTR 16.34) on home soil at Queen’s Club, and making the Cincinnati quarterfinals.

But he enjoyed his most impressive result yet in New York, making his first Slam semifinal. His biggest win was over No. 10 seed Alex de Minaur (UTR 16.09) 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 in the quarters. The 22-year-old is definitely a player to watch going forward.

Alexei Popyrin is on the rise

Alexei Popyrin (UTR 15.77) was the surprise champion of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal last month, having entered as the world No. 62.

He headed into the US Open as a seeded player for the first time and lived up to the challenge by ousting Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in the third round.

While he was defeated in the next round by the in-form Tiafoe, Popyrin remains a player to watch as the 25-year-old enters his prime, now ranked No. 24.

Carlos Alcaraz celebrates a big point at the US Open in New York

New era of men’s tennis is officially here

With Djokovic’s elimination in the third round, this was the first year since 2002 that neither Djokovic, Nadal, Federer won a Grand Slam trophy. That’s a remarkable 22-year stretch!

While men’s tennis had already welcomed new champions, it’s officially a new era with Sinner (age 23) and Alcaraz (age 21) taking the four Grand Slam titles this year. We’ll see if any new first-time champions will emerge in 2025.
