Aryna Sabalenka (UTR Rating 12.98) etched her name on the US Open trophy for the first time with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Jessica Pegula (UTR 12.88) in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday evening.
Sabalenka’s win was the grand finale of the final major of the year, where several other top players made big moves as well. Here are five takeaways from the 2024 US Open:
Aryna Sabalenka queen of hard courts
This time last year, Sabalenka had to settle for runner-up, losing to Coco Gauff (UTR 12.79) in the championship match.
She reversed that this season, winning her first US Open, her second major of 2024 (also the Australian Open), and her third career Grand Slam singles title.
She has proven herself to be the best player on hard courts at the biggest tournaments and has the No. 1 ranking in her sights.
It's been the summer of Jessica Pegula
She may not have lifted the trophy at the end of the tournament, but a US Open final was still a remarkable ending to a huge summer for Pegula as she continues to bolster her place among the elite players in the sport.
She made her first major final – including defeating world No. 1 Iga Swiatek (UTR 13.13) in the quarterfinals – to add to her WTA 1000 title in Toronto and runner-up finish at Cincinnati.
Pegula was 15-2 through the North-American hard-court swing, and has now reached a new career-high of world No. 3.
Emma Navarro making a name for herself
Before the US Open, we took a look at Emma Navarro’s (UTR 12.70) rise on the WTA Tour. She added the next chapter to her increasingly impressive story in New York by making her first Grand Slam semifinal.
En route, she ousted defending champion Gauff in the fourth round and the rising Paula Badosa (UTR 12.81) in the quarters. She is now entrenched in the Top 10 at world No. 8.
Paula Badosa returning to top form
Badosa hit a career-high ranking of world No. 2 in 2022, but a few injury setbacks in the past couple seasons caused a downturn in her results.
Now healthy again, she has been regaining that top form the past two months, culminating in reaching the US Open quarterfinals. Her fine play is reflected in the UTR women’s tennis rankings, where she currently sits at No. 6.
Swiatek and Sabalenka becoming a formidable 1-2 pair
When it comes to the most important tournaments on the WTA calendar, it’s a safe bet that you will see either Sabalenka or Swiatek at the business end.
Having now taken three of the four Grand Slam titles this year, the pair is becoming a formidable duo at the very top of the women’s game.
While more players, including Pegula and Navarro, will seek to challenge them, it will be interesting to see if Sabalenka and Swiatek can tighten their hold in 2025.
