UTR & NYJTL Award Shawn Mitchell Yon with the UTR Impact Story Award

While Rafa and Simona were clinching wins on the clay this weekend in France, across the ocean in New York City, over 900 youth tennis players were taking part in the 30th Annual New York Junior Tennis & Learning (NYJTL) Mayor’s Cup. Held over the course of two weekends in June, the Mayor’s Cup is the largest interscholastic tennis tournament in the nation, representing 160 private, public and parochial schools in the city at the elementary, middle and high school levels. This year, UTR was honored to partner with NYJTL and the Mayor’s Cup, which used UTR Powered by Oracle to set the draws and evaluate player skill levels. Not only did the UTR system help organizers facilitate two weekends of fun, competitive play for all players, but the UTR ratings also helped to spark conversations among players hoping to continue their tennis at the collegiate level with the numerous college coaches that attend the event.

As part of the tournament, UTR launched the first-ever UTR Impact Story Award, which was granted to a player who shared their story highlighting the impact tennis has had in their lives. UTR is proud to award Shawn Mitchell Yon with the 2018 UTR Impact Story Award. We are inspired by his drive and focus, and impressed with how he has transferred what he’s learned on the court and applied it to his studies, especially in math. Congratulations, Shawn! We see great things in your future! Check out all the video submissions from Mayor’s Cup participants on #MyUTRImpact on Twitter and Instagram - we think you’ll be as inspired as we are! We love to see how you play! Share your photos and stories with us @MyUTR and join the community to #MakeTennisBetter.
