The Top-10 Brazilians in College Tennis
This week, we’re taking a look at the top -10 Brazilian men and women’s collegiate players. There are a number of young powerhouse Brazilian players hitting the court here in the US who are making a big splash in college tennis and have a bright future ahead of them.
UTR looked developed these rankings by sorting the Brazilian men and women by their current UTRs (looking at the score, strength of competition and match history over the past three months) for a current view of their collegiate season.
The top-4 women in 2017 are holding on to their top spots this year, with Luisa Stefani, Ingrid Gamarra Martins, Mariana Humberg and Alory Pereira holding onto the one, two, three and four rankings, respectively. For the men, Gabriel Freidrich and Leonardo Civita-Telles hang onto their positions as the No.1 and No.2 Brazilian men from last year, with freshman Gabriel Decamps taking a hold of the No. 3 spot. (Gabe was featured as a UTR Freshman to Watch this year, check out UTR’s conversation with the University of Central Florida Knight!)
Luisa Stefani (UTR 11.66) again earns the top spot for the Brazilian women this year. The 5’6 Junior at Pepperdine University hails from Sao Paolo and is majoring in advertising. During her collegiate career, Stefani was named the WCC Player of the Year for two years in a row (becoming the 5th woman in tennis history to achieve this back to back honor) and as a freshman, was named the ITA Rookie of the Year, becoming the first Pepperdine athlete to earn the award.
Gabriel Freidrich (UTR 14.03) takes the top honors for men again this year. The 5’10 University of South Carolina Senior from Porto Alegre is a business major and has earned top honors throughout his college career. Freidrich was named to the All-SEC Second Team in 2016 and 2017 and was noted as an ITA Carolina Player to watch in 2016. Last season, Freidrich, who split time between the No. 1 and No. 2 spot, went 26-14 in singles play, including a 14-8 dual-match record and a 4-7 record in league play.
