ITA Summer Circuit Booms in 2017
On August 15, the ITA Summer Circuit powered by UTR completed its 2017 season with the National Summer Championships tournament at Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth, Texas. This summer began a partnership between the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and Universal Tennis Ratings (UTR) that proved highly successful over the 51-event-long summer series. Across the country, more than 5,600 collegiate and junior tennis players took part—representing a 14 percent increase over 2016. Announced in May, the ITA/UTR partnership meant that all events used the UTR events platform, and the results of all matches (which took place on college campuses) fed into each athlete’s UTR. Furthermore, each tournament seeded the top 50 percent of entrants, based on their UTRs. This guaranteed a much larger fraction of competitive matches than the standard 25 percent seeding. Seven of the events divided entrants (male or female) into flights organized by UTRs to ensure level-based play.
The Summer Circuit staged events on six consecutive weekends, beginning with the last weekend of June and running through July. It culminated with the August tourney in Fort Worth. The women’s singles winner there received a wildcard entry to the 2017 Riviera ITA Women’s All-American Championship, while the male champion earned a wildcard for the 2017 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championship.
Starting with singles draws of 128, the tournament ultimately crowned Alexander Lebedev of Notre Dame and Island Park, New York as its men’s champion. Lauren Proctor of Winthrop University and Bradenton, Florida emerged as queen of women’s singles. In the doubles draws of 64 entries, Bolivian Rodrigo Banzer teamed with Brazilian Leonardo Telles, both of the University of Texas, to win the men's’ championship. Duke teammates Ellyse Hamlin of Fairfield, Connecticut and Kaitlyn McCarthy nabbed the women’s title.
